OpenHow this is calculated
- Pick a mode: find a percentage of a number, work out what percentage one value is of another, measure the change between two values, or add and remove a percentage.
- Enter your figures in the number boxes. The percentage slider lets you adjust the percentage between 0 and 100 without typing.
- To find a percentage of a number, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. So 20% of 300 is (20 ÷ 100) × 300 = 60.
- To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the part by the total and multiply by 100. So 60 out of 300 is (60 ÷ 300) × 100 = 20%.
- To find a percentage change, take the difference between the two values, divide by the original, then multiply by 100. From 100 to 120 is (20 ÷ 100) × 100 = 20%.
- To add or remove a percentage, work out that percentage of the number, then add it on or take it off. Adding 20% to 100 gives 120, taking 20% off gives 80.
Frequently asked questions
What is a percentage?
A percentage is a number out of 100. So 25% means 25 out of 100, or one quarter. It's used to compare parts to a whole or to show how much something has changed.
How do I work out what percentage is of a number?
Use the "% of number" mode. Enter your percentage and the base number, and the calculator multiplies them together. For example, 20% of 500 = (20 ÷ 100) × 500 = 100.
How do I find what percentage one number is of another?
Use the "What % is it?" mode. Divide the smaller number by the larger one and multiply by 100. For example, 25 out of 100 = (25 ÷ 100) × 100 = 25%.
How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?
Use the "% change" mode. Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. For example, if something goes from 100 to 120, that's (20 ÷ 100) × 100 = 20% increase.
How do I add a percentage to a number (like VAT)?
Use the "Add / Remove %" mode and select "Add". This is useful for working out the total price after VAT (20% in the UK), discounts, or pay rises.
What is the difference between percentage points and percent?
A percentage is a proportion (e.g. 25%). Percentage points describe the difference between two percentages (e.g. "interest rates rose by 2 percentage points" means they went from 3% to 5%, not from 3% to 6%).
